Renal diet guidelines refer to certain diet rules people who suffer from kidney failure need to follow daily. Kidney failure is a serious health condition that needs to be treated with a lot of precaution, or else it could lead to waste products and fluids building up in the blood. These could endanger a patient’s life, and therefore following all renal diet guidelines is an absolute must.
What are Renal Diet Guidelines?
People who suffer from kidney failure need to see a dietitian at a dialysis center in order to obtain a personalized diet. But there are certain renal diet guidelines that can be followed prior to this. For instance, people who suffer from kidney failure should considerably reduce the amount of milk, ice cream or yogurt to a half a cup serving each day at most. However, nondairy creamers can be used up to one cup a day. Foods that are high in phosphorus and potassium should not be consumed, due to the fact they are known to create waste products in the blood. Dried beans, nuts, lentils, tasty peanut butter and nuts should therefore be avoided.
Renal Diet Guidelines – Salt
Other renal diet guidelines refer to the salt issue; salt needs to be treated extra-carefully and not be added to foods, due to its composition high in potassium. Spices that do not include salt and special herbs should be substituted for salt to those who are suffering from kidney failure.
Most renal diet guidelines suggest up to three high quality protein food servings a day. Three ounces of foods such as fish, eggs, lean meat or poultry can be consumed each day, but the servings need to be limited to a total of eight ounces per day. It’s best to avoid eating large quantities of cheddar cheese, and salted and processed canned cheese is also a bad idea. One needs to always check the labels of each processed product and see how much sodium, potassium or phosphorus it contains. For instance, one can choose to eat regular tuna, as long as the tuna is thoroughly rinsed under running water for at least a couple of minutes in order to reduce the sodium in it.
Renal Diet Guidelines – Fruit
Renal diet guidelines also refer to fruit meals, which should not be more than three servings a day. A medium fresh fruit should represent a single serving, but they should also be extremely low on potassium. Fruits like apples, apricots, watermelons, pears or peaches are just some of the fruits one can eat. Renal diet guidelines also restrict the consumption of vegetables to two servings each day. One cup of tossed salad or half of cup cooked okra, cucumber, beans, radish, carrots or corn are allowed.
General foods such as bread or tortillas and some crackers that do not contain any salt are to be consumed in moderation. However, no chips and pretzels or high-potassium bran cereals are allowed.
Some final renal diet guidelines include limiting fluids to 6 cups a day and eating regular meals, especially if one is also a diabetic.
